The Harris County Public Library’s Literacy program needs literacy tutor volunteers, (assisting adults in reading at a grade 0-5 reading level), as well as volunteer English as a second language tutors, (assisting adults new to the United States), at many Harris County Public Library branches. Houston Sail and Power Squadron offers four types of educational opportunities for recreational boaters:
1. America's Boating Course (ABC3)- a one day overview of boating requirements with an emphasis on safety. 
2. Navigation and Seamanship courses - most courses last about 2 months, with classes once per week at night. 
3. Seminars - most seminars are about 2 hours long and all focus on some particular aspect of boating.
4. On the water training - one day opportunities to obtain hands on instruction in maneuvering a medium sized boat around objects as well as docking and undocking.
